Question
cPanel updates rpm packages every night. Why doesn't the kernel get updated?
Answer
By default, WHM updates your system software each night but does not update the kernel. This is left for your systems administrator to update manually. The kernel can be updated from the command line with the following command:
yum update kernel
If you want cPanel & WHM also to update the system kernel, the "Enable Linux kernel update during nightly maintenance." tweak setting needs to be enabled.
- Log into WHM as the 'root' user.
- Navigate to "WHM / Server Configuration / Tweak Settings."
- Click the "System" tab.
- Set "Enable Linux kernel update during nightly maintenance." to "On."
Please note, enabling this setting will allow cPanel to update the kernel during the nightly update, but the server will have to be manually rebooted for the system to run the new kernel.
