Dedicated Backup Server Configuration
Hi,
I hope this is posted in the right place.
I am looking into getting a dedicated backup server and i have some questions. I will be using it to store backups created on cPanel but it will just store the data, the data wont be actually used on that server, its just a storage device (not a webserver). I hope to create a backup via cPanel on server1 and then port that backup to server2 every day.
1. Do i need a host name for the backup server? I should just be able to go by IP right?
2. I think all i should need is just the OS on the backup server and nothing else?
3. Someone from the server company suggested i might have to have cpanel on both servers but i dont think thats true? One can be cPanel and the other just OS

UPDATE: Maybe its both.... maybe its like this.... If i rent a preconfiged webserver (they are less cost) then i would need a hostname for it even though im just putting files in the dir. If i rent a preconfiged storage server i dont need a hostname and i can still just put the files in the dir.. Does that sound right?

Hi kwdamp, yes it was quite an adventure for sure. :) In the end it was a simple solution, however i learned alot along the way. Now i just hope i can retain the lessons for when i run into such things again one day should i need them. The main reason i wanted a dedi backup server is because i learned a long time ago that playing under someone elses shade leaves you exposed to the sun at their whim and i wanted to do this under my thumb not someone elses. Right now one of my sites is about 45GB. Videos take up alot of space and it will double in size in no time at all. The backup server is 1TB and has 100TB bandwidth allowance every month. I got a great deal because they were out of the server i wanted so they upgraded me at no additional cost. This server will be fine for awhile, and i dont see going over that bandwidth limit any time soon. I did consider google drive however i enjoy my privacy and my small internet footprint that i have now and i just dont trust google to do or apply the right rules to protect me. I only use what i have to use to do what i do and nothing more. And dont we already give the data farming king google enough of our information as it is. I also have to consider the privacy of others including those on my websites so i just could not justify anything other then a dedicated server. I also dont trust the cloud and probably never will, in relative terms it is still a new technology and i just dont trust anything in which to work it has to make a bunch of copies of your data and pass them around all over the place. Amazon server was not even an option as so many of my current customers have so many issues with their server configurations and cant get stuff to work right. I love having the dedi server backup and i would never do it any other way. I walked away from the hosting business along time ago. Not just because it was a money pit, or even that the competition is fierce, or that the vendors you must use are making it so hard for the little guy to compete, or even that they try to push the little guy out of the business entirely, or even that the only ones that seem to make money are the vendors. I did so mainly because you become so utterly dependent on those vendors to do the business and if one vendor goes down for a day, or you lose that service for some reason they your business folds up. That is mainly why i got my own server, if it folds up then i do it, not someone else. Having control is very important to me in what i do, it was a hard lesson learned a long time ago. I know that sometimes i have even mouthed off about cPanel, the price, the ways they make some things complicated on the backend. But after this adventure (and finding out they had already thought of my need and had it developed already) most of that bad lip service will subside and i value them more and more every day. At my age and with my health conditions i cant imagine having to fuss with other panels or options, i just could not do it mentally. I mention this because cPanel is one of the very few vendors that i now feel comfy and safe using and i can depend on them to be around for a long time to come. I hope that explains things... :) 0 -
Hey, I haven't read all replies on this post but I'd recommend against having any kind of web interface for a backup server. Web servers may come with their own vulnerabilities and hassles, backup server must only contain what's necessary. 0 -

That's a great summary. I have my doubts about general "cloud computing" as well, and to a lesser extent google drive. The only justification for me using it as a backup is I get a daily confirmation the upload was successful, and the odds of it going down permanently on the same day I need it to restore something are very remote. The video files you mention also complicate things a lot. I should also add that I couldn't afford a full dedicated server for backups right now. So my options where no remote backups, google drive or amazon, or manual backups. I think I chose the best option based on those possibilities. LOL0 -
My dedicated server is only $28 a month, alot less than they used to be. A few years ago i checked and i could not find one for less than $90 and it was a hunk of junk with no real diskspace, no real memory, and bearly any allowed bandwidth to speak of. Now i have a nice machine with all of that for 1/3 the price. 0
