A little update on this: I managed to recover the website by removing the .htaccess file, found two index.htmls in the same directory (one of them is index.html_), and re-published, and is now directing to a non-www domain i.e. mysite.com. Can the public still connect to and see this website?

Hello, The public will be able to access any file under the public_html directory unless .htaccess rules or it's permissions are specifically configured to deny access to it. That said, I believe this is the feature you are looking for: Indexes - Version 68 Documentation - cPanel Documentation Thank you.
