root partition running out of space

Hello, My Disk pace is 40 GB cPanel users are using - 11326 MB and for weakly Backup Maximum- 11326 MB But still when I am looking for free space, centos showing this Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/vda1 40G 30G 7.8G 80% / tmpfs 939M 0 939M 0% /dev/shm /usr/tmpDSK 1.6G 35M 1.5G 3% /tmp Please let me know who is using the space. And how can I remove. Thanks in advance.

    This is pretty normal usage for a cPanel server. You're forgetting about your OS files, cPanel files etc.

    As pointed out, with the user space and backup space, the OS and cPanel files appear to be consuming ~10GB, which I believe is on par with most systems.

    Just trying to trace a similar issue here but we have taken into account the usage. Daily reports of usage 44gb (88%) for a single user VPS User is using 25GB in cpanel Cpanel, log files etc space estimated 7-8gb The other 10gb of missing space seems to be virtfs? However, virtfs doesn't really use space so is Cpanel sending false reports without taking this into account? It just freaks the client and they email us saying where is our space. Hard to explain. Is this the reason and what can we do?

    Hi, You can execute fixquota on your server once to start with the investigation. Secondly check for the user files in different location because files present anywhere on the server with the user ownership will be calculated in his account.

    Thanks, we did fix quotas etc. The quota is correct. It"s the opposite to what you think, there is 10gb in the root system which we can"t account for which is not user files. Ie do -h and cpanel alerts show 20gb more than user files. Half that is cpanel, the other half is nowhere. We did the commands to list large folders etc and could only find virtfs

    Hello @uk01, I recommend contacting your VPS hosting provider to verify if the usage percentage isn't from the VPS node itself. For instance, if you have 20G free on your individual VPS, but only 10G is free on the VPS hardware node, your server may report that you only have 10G free. Thank you.

    I am the vps provider and the admin of the vsphere environment. I also manage this clients vps, definitely a 50gb vps. We managed to remove a few gb of magenta log files for now, to reduce usage but still 10gb unaccounted for. Will have to look into it again at a later date.

    Hello @uk01, Rebooting the VPS can sometimes solve this issue in cases where previously removed files are still associated with running services. Thank you.

    yeah we did that thinking the same, but it still showed. Very weird, I guess it just needs more investigation which we'll do when we can. We bought some time deleting the massive magento files as it's put him back to 60% so it avoids the cpanel warning emails.
