Removing site publisher causes 500 internal server error

Hello all, I followed a forum guide on here regarding how to remove the site publisher template. However, after deleting the index.html file, the website shows an internal server error. "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator at ... to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 500 Internal server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." Checking the error logs, it gave me "Permission denied: ... /home/user/public_html/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable and that 'home/user/public_html/' is executable." I have checked, and .htaccess has 744 permissions while public_html has 755 permissions. Prior to this, I was trying to install wordpress to cpanel. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

  I have solved the issue. 500 internal server error was due to plugin errors. I did not need to delete the index.php file to get rid of site publisher for some reason.
