SSL for Wildcard Subdomains
I'm aware that AutoSSL does not support wildcard subdomains.
If I was to purchase a wildcard SSL certificate and install it on a wildcard subdomain entry, would it work and secure all the dynamically generated subdomains?
I'm just hoping to get confirmation that a wildcard SSL certificate and cPanel's implementation of wildcard subdomains will work before selling my client the certificate.
Thanks!

Hello, You can install your own wildcard SSL certificate, but note the behavior referenced on the following thread if you are planning to use it for wildcard subdomains: Thank you. 0 -
In that thread you wrote: [quote]Typically, wildcard subdomains are used to direct requests to any subdomain associated with a domain name to a single location. Thus, if you wanted individual subdomains with their own content, you would have to install the wildcard certificate on each individual subdomain.
My client has *.domain.com defined as a wildcard subdomain that is pointed to public_html so the subdomains are associated with a single location. Their code handles the content changes depending on if sub1.domain.com or sub2.domain.com is visited. I'm hoping for confirmation that in this case if they were to install a wildcard SSL certificate that sub1.domain.com and sub2.domain.com would be secured by the certificate installed at *.domain.com, without needing to install the certificate separately for the subdomains, since they are dynamically generated and not defined in cPanel/Apache aside from the wildcard *.domain.com subdomain? Would this work?0 -
Hi @Varial, To update, here's part of the response from one of our Technical Analysts in your corresponding support ticket: [QUOTE]A wildcard SSL will work for any subdomain for the main domain. Since it only matters what VirtualHost it is under and you have stated that you are using a *.theirdomain.com single virtualhost and that it has the wildcard SSL installed for it. So this means that any subdomain created after will work with SSL. However, I do have to inform you that the wildcard SSL will disrupt the cPanel proxy subdomains such as "cpanel.", "webmail.", etc. This type of disruption when using a wildcard subdomain is mentioned in our official documentation: Subdomains - Version 68 Documentation - cPanel Documentation
