    OK, solved it... removed postfix and the version of mySQL that it installed. Then went into WHM -> cPanel -> upgrade to latest version (checked force install). I got the cPanel version of mySQl back. Had to manually change passwords and add users and permissions as needed...I hadn't backed up any databases but looks like I got lucky because they were saved in /var/lib/mysql/mysql I'm back in business. This thread can be closed.
