Disk Issues
So, with no Linux experience I inherited a cPanel server when I took over in my job about 2 years ago. I dug in and learned what I could. We were having backup issues at one time and the / was filling up, so, to take care of this i added some space to the 2nd disk to extend the lv_root. Now I have one of the customers needing more space in the lv_home. They do a lot of videos and their library is growing. Here is how everything looks now...
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vg_webhost1-lv_root
739G 220G 482G 32% /
tmpfs 7.8G 0 7.8G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 477M 118M 334M 27% /boot
/dev/mapper/vg_webhost1-lv_home
341G 209G 115G 65% /home
/usr/tmpDSK 4.0G 137M 3.7G 4% /tmp
And this is how sda looks....
(parted) print free
Model: VMware Virtual disk (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 1074GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
32.3kB 1049kB 1016kB Free Space
1 1049kB 525MB 524MB primary ext4 boot
2 525MB 322GB 322GB primary lvm
3 322GB 537GB 215GB primary lvm
4 537GB 644GB 107GB primary lvm
644GB 1074GB 429GB Free Space
You can see that when I did this last year I screwed up and now there are 429GB of space I can't use. Can't add a 5th partition and can't extend the volume. When I try in parted I get a could not detect filesystem error.
Any advice for this situation? I really need to recover that free space.

What I am thinking now, is attempt to delete sda4 and rebuild the partition with the full size. I would like to know whats on that disk first. sda4 is assigned to lv_root. if i look at the physical volumes it says sda4 is 100g PV VG Fmt Attr PSize PFree /dev/sda2 vg_webhost1 lvm2 a--u 299.51g 0 /dev/sda3 vg_webhost1 lvm2 a--u 199.99g 0 /dev/sda4 vg_webhost1 lvm2 a--u 100.00g 0 /dev/sdb1 vg_webhost1 lvm2 a--u 499.99g 4.00m but if i try to look at it with df its a different size and a different mount point df -h /dev/sda4 Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on - 7.8G 180K 7.8G 1% /dev here is sda4 in pvdisplay --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sda4 VG Name vg_webhost1 PV Size 100.01 GiB / not usable 2.53 MiB Allocatable yes (but full) PE Size 4.00 MiB Total PE 25601 Free PE 0 Allocated PE 25601 PV UUID ir4DML-ZhvN-Atai-0bFO-tf7A-5mCq-wgNI50 --- Physical Segments --- Physical extent 0 to 25600: Logical volume /dev/vg_webhost1/lv_root Logical extents 38400 to 64000 0 -
Hello @Charlie Young, I recommend reaching out to your data center or hosting provider for advice on the best approach to resizing or extending the existing disk/partition setup. You could also post a website such as StackOverflow where discussions of OS-related topics are more frequent, but keep in mind that a single mistake when alternating the partition/disk setup could lead to data loss (which is why we generally avoid offering advice on the topic). We also provide a list of companies offering system administration services at: Thank you. 0
