Gmail access: forward vs POP

I forward all email from my cpanel account to my gmail account. I've been using this set up for years and works fine, I think. I have another account that uses POP to access email, which is a bit slow, since gmail doesn't check very often. My question is, does either method use more server resources than the other? I actually manage several separate accounts on the server, with overall email usage increasing, so I'm just wondering if using POP access would make much difference?

  Hi @localword Neither is going to use any noticeable amount of resources in comparison but I personally would not recommend you forward mail from your account to Gmail. While it works for you it doesn't work on a larger scale as it in many cases forwards spam which can lead to gmail rejecting or deferring/delaying your mail. Ultimately this is just opinion though but, I use the pop access for that and if I want it to check mail faster (i.e. I'm expecting something) I go into settings and tell it to check mail now. Otherwise, I don't worry about it and don't run into any issues on my personal server with the configuration. Thanks!

  Thanks for that answer. I manage websites and emails for some small business on a VPS, so I'm just wanting to make sure I have plenty of server resources available, or making things as efficient as possible. I understand what you're saying about forwarding spam to gmail. I've just recently been exploring this more, so started using spamassassin and also disabled forwarding of spam, so that helps. But yes, I need to keep an eye on spam, don't want gmail blocking me!

  I had a client that wanted to do exactly the same thing. We first tried the following: To avoid any possibility of Gmail marking up the server as being a source of spam, we created an Email Filter that was something like this: If Spam Score ......... is below .......... 2 (we used a ridiculously low number here, but you should appraise what is best based on the spam scores you are getting) ......... Redirect to Email ..... your@Gmail.account Obviously, this has a huge margin for error as many emails that are marked up as seeming spammy to Spamassassin; will not then be delivered to Gmail. This just didn't work satisfactorily for the client, so we went with the following solution: Set up your Gmail account to poll your cPanel account by IMAP or, preferably, POP and take/copy the mails over to the Gmail inbox and deal with it all there. Unless you use POP and 'delete from server', you would have to keep an eye on the size of your cPanel mailbox as they can fill up without you noticing :)
