Email only cPanel account
Hello All.
Looking to properly configure an email only cpanel account but having a few issues with it.
the website is currently hosted on an nginx server, and mail was previously setup through gmail.
Host is godaddy for the cpanel stuff. DNS is also configured through godaddy. Checked the registration and it's set to ns57.domaincontrol.com for nameserver - so I've confirmed it's set to godaddy.
So I removed the entries for google mail servers from the DNS.
Based on advice I read on the forums I created a new A record with a name "mail.MYDOMAIN.com" and the cpanel IP address. Then I created a new MX record with the name @ and the value mail.mydomain.com with a priority of 1.
However I'm still getting undeliverable errors when I try to send to an address created in cpanel. The error comes from gmail, and the error at the bottom reads
DNS Error: 8201799 DNS type 'mx' lookup of mydomain.com responded with code NOERROR 8201799 DNS type 'aaaa' lookup of mail.mydomain.com. responded with code NXDOMAIN 8201799 DNS type 'a' lookup of mail.mydomain.com. responded with code NXDOMAIN
Thanks for any help

Hi @morriscey It does look like you're on the right path. I do not see an A record having been created for the mail subdomain though (before editing the links still contained your actual domain name) Where are you creating the A record? Because DNS is managed by GoDaddy you'll need to ensure you're creating the A record there - creating it on the server will not resolve the issue. Thanks! 0 -
Hey guys, Im having an issue like this too. I have a domain registered and DNS managed by Godaddy, I currently have it pointed to shopify and would like the emails to point to my VPS (also via godaddy) but can not figure it out. My records currently look like this. Am i missing something? 0 -

The IP address listed for mail.yourdomain.com.au - is that the IP address of your VPS? This looks to be configured correctly if so.0 -

Hi Lauren! Yes that IP is my VPS IP address. I have attached a screenshot of the DNS Zone that is configured on the WHM/Cpanel account for the domain name that will use my VPS for emails. Essentially, all i want is for the domain name : domain.com.au to use my VPS for emails. So i created an account via WHM and pointed the domain accordingly, its still not working. Im not sure if this is correct, i suspect im doing something totally wrong. I apologise for my ignorance, my understanding of DNS is limited. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Steve0 -
Forgot to attach screenshot of DNS configuration on WHM. 0 -
Hi @webjuice Since the cPanel sever doesn't control DNS for the subdomain the Zone file on the cPanel server is not useful. I do see that while you have the A record configured at the registrar it does not resolve. Go Daddy gives these instructions for adding an A record Add an A record | Domains - GoDaddy Help US which might be helpful? Thanks! 0
