Optimising website navigation menu

Hello, I have found article about UX menu design - Removed -. There is the paragraph about search box: "A website"s search box is probably the most commonly used and therefore, very important component of user experience." What do you think - it is always needed to have search box? Do you have it on your website? When it is optional and when you just must have it?
