PowerDNS out of date?

The current release of PowerDNS is almost 2 years old, version 3.4.11. The current release is version 4.1. How come it is so out of date? Are there any plans to upgrade it? Alternatively can I just upgrade it myself without breaking anything?

  Never mind, I originally posted this thread because we were not PCI compliant with the current version of BIND that is supplied with CentOS 7.5, so I switched to PowerDNS but noticed it was an old version and assumed we would still not be compliant. How wrong was I... it's perfectly compliant! I have also noticed this in the changelog for v76:

  • Fixed case CPANEL-21537: Update cpanel-pdns to 4.1.3-2.cp1174.
