Failed to open .htaccess for writing

Whenever I try to protect a directory, I get this error: Error: There was a problem creating the sub-domain. Htaccess::set_protect failed: Failed to open .htaccess for writing.

  Check the owner and permissions of the htaccess file in public_html. It should be owned as the user ad not root or some other account user. And it should be 644 permissions minimum.
