Mariadb is generating a higher sql query in some databases, mysql 5.7 is always more stable. I haven't updated my servers to mariadb, I'm very happy. Note: This is my personal experience.

Hello @davetanguay, We created a blog post that details why we added support for MySQL 5.7 to the product: Being a Good Open Source Community Member: Why we hesitated on MySQL 5.7 | cPanel Blog One caveat about MariaDB to keep-in-mind is that upgrades to MariaDB are currently one-way, meaning you can't switch back to MySQL after converting to MariaDB. Thus, you may want to upgrade to MySQL 5.7 first and then switch to MariaDB later if you determine it's a better fit. Thank you.

Absolutely true! MariaDB makes 2-4x much load compared to Mysql. I really regret "upgraded" to MariaDB. DONT do it!

I think soon cPanel will offer a script/tool to switch from MariaDB to MySQL. There is a feature request here Revert to MySQL from MariaDB Migration
