SOLVED: Not many people know this -or at least I didn't - that just because you fill-in the details on an smtp configuration page doesn't mean that your email will be sent via smtp. Duh! I wish I had known that. Problem was that Mautic - the email marketing software - was telling me I was sending my emails via smtp when in fact they were being sent via php and thus failing dmarc tests. You need to know which sending mechanism is in place. In Mautic email configuration that means choosing smtp, entering the correct values for from, bounces, etc. and then making sure you use (at least in my case) smtp authentication mode and choosing something other than cram-MD5 (which didn't work for me but may work for you) and providing a password. You must provide a password or smtp will not be used although Mautic will claim success. The form in Mautic doesn't really make it clear if your password has been accepted or not and you repeatedly receive messages about clicking "apply". Anyway, make sure you are using smtp and not php. Start your troubleshooting there.
