Is there a way to speed up server to server FTP?

We have a back up that has to be done via FTP for 1.5tb, I'm trying to find the fastest way to transfer the files. We seem to only be getting 500k-1m a second for our test files. Both servers have a 100mbit connection. Is there anyway to speed up server to server FTP?
