Is anything noted in the spamd errors log when this occurs? /usr/local/cpanel/logs/spamd_error_log

I have just checked the mail delivery in WHM and on that exact minute there was 9 emails received from Direct.gov to my own personal account. all of which are mainly text other than the logo and other usual parts.

What do you have set in WHM>>Server Configuration>>Tweak Settings ->
Conserve memory Conserve memory at the expense of more CPU usage and disk I/O.
Max cPanel process memory (Minimum: 4,096) The maximum memory a cPanel process can use before it is killed off. This setting"s minimum value depends on the number of cPanel accounts on the system.

This pretty clearly states that you're running out of memory though and not just with spamd. It's not a memory allocation issue since Max cPanel Process memory is unlimited and conserve memory is disabled. How are you determining the amount of memory you had free at the time of the error with spamd? Do you see out of memory related errors in /var/log/messages
    as well?
