The license has been activated too many times on different machines
I received this message this morning when trying to access WHM...
[quote]
Cannot Read License File To access the interface, you must install the license and ensure that the license is active.
You can purchase or lease a license directly from cPanel, or from one of our Partners.
If you do not currently own a license, register at the cPanel Store and request a trial license.
The cPanel license server replied that the license has been activated on too many machines (600). Please contact billing at cpanel.net The exact message was: The license has been activated too many times on different machines. (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
The licence has never, ever been installed on any other machine, so the message makes no sense. I've emailed billing at cpanel.net as instructed, but in the meantime, does anyone know of anything I can do to sort this out so that WHM can be accessed again?

@pedroaste - when you see that message you have to contact our Customer Service team directly to get that resolved, as there isn't a way to fix that on your end. You can use the details here to contact that team: How do I contact cPanel Customer Service? 0 -
Hi, Same issue here. 0 -
@hbnetwork - my above advice is still the same - for that issue you have to contact our Customer Service team directly so we can check the license on our end. It's quick, and we can get it taken care of. 0 -
I have the same problem now after migrating accounts to a new server. I updated the hostname so it would install SSL for hostname and then it shows this stupid message and now my email is not working at MailChannels. What kind of nonsense is this? Seriously? And yes, I created a ticket about it, but still, it's really off putting. 0 -
It works ok now cPanel corrected the issue their end. I think the issue is cPanel by default installs hostname as using cprapid something, and that's causing the problem. I changed it from cprapid something to cloud.hostxnow.com, and that's when it showed the issue. Hopefully, cPanel can correct that because it's quite annoying for the reasons I mentioned. Can cause a big inconvenience depending on the setup of the server, i.e. using MailChannels, etc. 0 -
@HostXNow_Chris - when you create a new server, if the hostname isn't specified we do install a hostname using the cprapid domain you've seen. This ensures that everyone can access WHM with an SSL connection so there is no offputting security warnings during their initial log in. When you change the hostname to your preferred value, there won't instantly be an SSL available as that check happens nightly. However, you can force that check to happen by running the following command: /usr/local/cpanel/bin/checkallsslcerts
and that will attempt to issue the hostname certificate right then. As long as the DNS is correct it should only take a few minutes for that to be issued.0 -
this problems keeps happening... 3 times in the last 2 months.. 1 hostname change, creates this error of too many uses on the license.. wich is used only once.. 0 -
@JoseDieguez - when this issue happens, what do you see reported in /usr/local/cpanel/logs/license_log ? 0 -

usually the process is: set up hostname cpanel change it to some cprapid hostname we setup our hostname again license gets "used too many times". It's been a few times like this, i don't check logs, because everywhere it says to contact CS to fix it. and to be fair they reply quickly fixing or re-activating the license.0 -
In your situation it sounds like the hostname may be changing enough to lock the license. Could I recommend a slight change to your procedure? I would advise that when you first setup the hostname to make sure it resolves in DNS. If it does not, that's when the automated cprapid hostname gets created, as that allows users to access WHM directly without using the server's IP address. If the initial hostname isn't going to resolve in the DNS system, it would be best to just let the installation make the change to the cprapid hostname, and then you can change it later. That way the licensed hostname only gets updated one time instead of twice in a very short period. 0
