Rsync retention issue

I have rsync (to Linux) and s3 configured as backup destinations on two servers. I have the daily retentions set for 5 days and monthly for 12. The S3 bucket has a year of data in there, properly trimmed down as per the retention schedule. The rsync destination, however, has 2 months of daily's and is running me out of space on that box. Is there an issue with rsync and retention policy or is maybe having multiple destinations confusing the retention policy?
