Yum update running all the time

Hello, I've searches around trying to find if this is normal or a way to fix it it if it isn't. When on WHM I keep getting high server loads, when I have a look I see this running at high CPU usage: /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/yum check-update And it seems to run a lot throughout the day, seems a bit too often... Is there away to change this? Thanks in advance.

    Try killing the process and then run the yum update command manually from CLI to see what the problems is.

    Thank you for your reply. Tried killing it just now as it was running at 60%.     It sounds as though it's not in real-time if you went to kill the process and it wasn't present.

    I get this when on WHM and I click load average (top right corner). I"ve been able to kill it a few times lately, maybe I just missed it earlier. sometimes it"s using 80% cpu. Just seems wrong. I can"t remember it been like this before.

    Ahh ok, that takes you to the Process Manager which is slightly delayed though not much - I'd always double-check this with top through the CLI first. What's noted in the yum logs, any errors? You can find them at /var/log/yum.log

    None of that looks abnormal, the update on the 9th of April took about 1 minute to complete - are you seeing the process spike or is it running for an extended amount of time consuming resources?

    Hello, More spikes to be honest. I keep wondering why my system load is high and every time I check it's always running the Yum Update. I mean it could be every 5minutes it's doing this. Wouldn't be to bad if it was once or twice a day. It never use to do this either so not sure what happened. My server load use to nice and low all the time. Glad I wasn't missing something obvious!

    Based on that output from the yum log it doesn't look like it's running more than once daily in fact it looks like it's running every other day. The 5th, 7th and 9th of April where the 9th of April it did have quite a bit to update but only took up a little of 1 minute.

    How strange. Between me posting and you posting now I have seen it happen about 3 times. Attached is some screen shots, they're not too bad. Ive seen some up in the 80% Any ideas?

    Try monitoring TOP from the command line to see how much CPU 'yum update' is using. Remember to divide the percentage shown by the # of cpu's you have. For example, if 'yum update' shows its using 80% cpu and you have 4 cpu's that's only 20% each so nothing to worry about.

    Thanks kernow. I have been monitoring TOP and I see Yum runs every couple of seconds, sometimes at 100% so thats 25% on my this server as it has 4CPU. Why would it run this often? I did the same on my other server and I've hardy seen Yum run. Any ideas?
