CentOS 8 Support Update?

I guess that the stabilization of Centos 8 will reach the end of 2020. Either by the end of the year, you will continue to wait with the centos 6 in the 86 version and when the centos 8 support comes, you will switch directly. Or, you will already have 2 times the workload, like switching to centos 7 and then switching to centos 8, but you will have more time. This can give you flexibility in the migrate process.

    I heard third quarter unofficially.

That would be great. I could wait that long. Hopefully, we can get some official word from one of the cPanel folks here. It won't be the end of the world if I have to go with CentOS 7; it's supported for several more years by the developers, and probably for at least a few years by CPanel, but I would like to go with CentOS 8.

Yeah I just caved and went with Cent7 for one of our hosting servers I decided not to wait.

Patience is not one of my virtues, so I am sitting on my hands to keep from doing the same thing. :)

This is also the most up to date thread on CentOS 8 support I don't have more information than that right now though unfortunately.

Here but I don't have any more information than that now. There's no ETA I've been provided and there's nothing updated on the Up Next page. I'll poke again in the morning and see if I can get anything more up to date for you guys.

I'm sure someone there knows, it's just a matter of finding them and getting them to share. Thanks for trying @cPanelLauren !

The soonest we'd see support for CentOS 8 is in version 90.

Thanks @cPanelLauren I'm not expecting a solid date, I'm just looking for some guidance on whether to migrate my server from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 now, or to wait for CentoOS 8 support if it's going to be out before CentOS 6 reaches EOL. I won't hold you to it, either, since I know the unexpected can come up with such things.

So v86 of cPanel & WHM is the last version which will support CentOS 6 - but this version is also an LTS version. This means that it will be supported until March 31st, 2021 - so if you're struggling with this decision (transitional times like this are always tough) I'd say hang tight on LTS until we release CentOS 8 support. That way you're on a supported OS, you're doing less migration and remaining on a supported tier of cPanel & WHM. There's some really great information on this here:

Thanks @cPanelLauren I may be confused, but since we're not running Cloudlinux, just vanilla CentOS 6, we will no longer receive security updates to our OS and non-cPanel packages after the CentOS 6 EOL date this November, despite the fact that we're running v86 LTS of WHM, correct?

We are also about to move to a new server. I saw guides on the internet explaining how to install cPanel on CentOS 8. There is also an entry in the 88 change log. Can I install cPanal 88 on CentOS 8 or is it completely incompatible?

Such installations are unoffical methods. Not recommended by Cpanel. Do not do this until Centos 8 support is officially announced by cpanel.

Why not install 88 w/ MySQL 8 on Centos 8.1? What is it that you are waiting for to happen in 90 other than an official go-ahead?

I had the same question as the original poster but there is another thing too: I see that CENTOS 7 is upgradeable to 8 without a need to reinstall (as when going from 6 to 7). Would cPanel be OK if it is installed on CENTOS 7 and the OS gets updated to 8?

OK I am new here, I just signed up... but I just installed Centos 8, and went to install Cpanel and get a big red message full of text that Cpanel will not install and is not compatible. Really ? Why did I just pay a monthly fee ? You guys don't keep current ? What the Hell ?

Is this still valid? Also, any plans on in-place upgrading of Centos 7 installations to Centos 8? This is important in that we could then decide whether we should wait for Centos 8 capability or should we just migrate to Centos 7 now in the safe knowledge that it will eventually be upgradable to Centos 8.

That is correct, which is why we are suggesting CloudLinux 6

Because cPanel doesn't support CentOS 8 as of right now, while there may be ways to do this through outside channels you risk stability and there is no support if you run into problems.

This is still valid, if the OS allows the upgrade this way through officially supported channels it is possible this would be a possibility but I do not have details on this right now.

The lack of urgency is troubling. Centos 6 is no longer supported and now centos 6 is blocking version 88 upgrade. It's ridiculous to expect us to upgrade to centos 7 and then mere months later have to do another wholesale upgrade to centos 8.. This should be prioritized so we can move ONE TIME to centos 8 without having to make 2 major migrations and without having to pay for CloudLinux extortion. At this point, each day centos 6 blocks an upgrade because we don't have a reasonable path forward, we're paying for a service we aren't getting full value out of. You shouldn't both be charging full price for licenses and not supporting the latest operating systems which have been out for more than 9 months. Especially since the release previews were available to cpanel for months ahead of it's release. Supporting new OS versions shouldn't come last, it shoul be a priority.

I can not see CentOS 8 support in v90 release notes. Please don't tell me that it didn't make it to 90. Wow. Just wow...

The least one could expect would be support for the most popular server OS that is already out since almost 1 year, considering the new "premium" pricing. The priorities are questionable. Why would MySQL 8 have higher priority than CentOS 8? Support for MySQL 8 could have been added later, as it's much easier to upgrade MySQL than CentOS (if upgrading from CentOS 7 to 8 is safe at all). We have a few server leases ending in mid September 2020. It's very frustrating for us and hundreds of clients if we'll have to stick to CentOS 7 for another 3-4 years, then go through the hassle of migrating servers again before CentOS 7 reaches EOL.

Could Nick or someone high up in management please comment on this situation and clarify the roadmap for Centos 8 and the potential possibility of in-place upgrading from Centos 7 to Centos 8?
