Subdomain as account

I have pointed a subdomain directly at the IP of my cPanel server. Checked it with dig, the subdomain points there. I created a new Account in WHM, used the defaults. Checked in DNS Zones, there is automatically an A record for the domain and it shows the DNS provider for the subdomain. When I ping the subdomain it looks like it finds the IP, but doesn't resolve beyond that. $ ping sub.domain.cloud PING sub.domain.cloud (nn.n.n.n): 56 data bytes Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2 ^C --- sub.domain.cloud ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
