Siteground --> cPanel
Hi,
I'm a graphic designer who has been creating a website for a client. I'm not a developer, so forgive the dumb question. I set up the site on Siteground with its own domain, however, they would like to migrate the site to a different domain hosted here on cPanel. I know Siteground offers a domain migration service, is there something similar available on cPanel? Is there a way to do this?
Thank you in advance for this silly question!

Hi @Jess__J, Transferring a domain is a different process compared to transferring a website's contents. Also, cPanel itself doesn't provide hosting although the cPanel team can transfer websites on behalf of hosting providers. cPanel is the platform most hosting providers use. Is the Siteground website using cPanel? If it is, the new hosting provider should transfer the website for free. If the Siteground website isn't using cPanel, the hosting provider may charge you a fee, for the transfer because it requires manual work. Domain transfers are a separate thing altogether. They can take a few days and to initiate a domain transfer, you need an EPP code aka domain secret or password. While a domain is being transferred, you can't change the name servers so it's best to move the website first, in my opinion. Hope that helps! 0 -

To clarify are they trying to migrate the site content to a different domain or move the domain and content?0 -

Thanks for the message. We would be fine with either option. Currently, we have a domain (brandorganic) in cPanel and a domain (brand-organic) in Siteground. The one in Siteground (brand-organic) is what we'd like to migrate. It's fine if we keep brand-organic or replace the content on brandorganic. Does that make sense?0 -

Thank you so much. This is what I'm the most confused about. If I'm understanding correctly, and please correct me if I'm wrong: cPanel is a technology that runs on top of a hosting provider? When I log into my client's cPanel, I am logging into a cPanel running on GoDaddy or another hosting provider. Noob question, I know. Would my best course of action be to find out where the site is hosted? And then see if I can transfer the website to that provider?0 -

You're welcome. Yes, you are correct. You can check what name servers the domain is currently using by browsing to, for example, whatsmydns.net choosing NS as the record type and entering the domain name. If it's not obvious from the name servers who the host is, just google one of the name servers. Ask your potential new host if they use cPanel and if the transfer to their platform is free. Feel free to PM me the domain name if you need further help.0
