Reverse DNS for Home-Based Server
Greetings,
I have been using cPanel for 15 years, on servers hosted by various data centers. For some time, I have wanted to have a server in my home. I have 1gbps fiber with a static IP. Of course, I want to use cPanel, using a metal solo license. I have been researching the various things I need to do, and one that seems to be holding me back is configuring Reverse DNS.
I understand the first step is to determine the authoritative name server. If my router's IP were 1.2.3.4, I would issue this command:
dig +nssearch 3.2.1.in-addr.arpa
However, this command produces nothing. I am wondering whether this is because the server I run the command on is not assigned that IP. I might not have the nameserver authority to set the Reverse IP. And, I doubt my fiber provider has the ability to set it up, or delegate it to me. Would this mean I am stuck? Do SPF and DKIM records do enough to compensate for a lack of Reverse DNS?

Have you discussed with your provider whether or not you can even do this? A lot of home broadband providers won't allow this to be set up though yours may differ. None the less in most cases they will not delegate access for you to configure these are on your own. Not having valid PTR records will cause issues with mail SPF and DKIM aren't enough, unfortunately. 0 -
Thank you, Lauren. I'm trying to reach someone who can discuss having a home server and Reverse DNS. Meanwhile, I am looking into whether it's possible to manage email via a regular Gmail account. Michael 0 -
It might be tough to get your provider to get you to someone who is able to assist you since this isn't their primary objective in this circumstance. You could bypass all of this by going through something like Google's GSuite 0
