I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to do. Feel free to elaborate. If you're moving .tar.gz files via FTP, you need to place them in your /home/ directory before you can restore them. Hope that helps!

Yeah, just to ever so slightly elaborate on @ZenHostingTravis you have to FTP the backup files back to the server and then restore them. A great alternate option is JetBackup, it would give you whm and cpanel visibility on the backups and let you restore them and it pulls them off the ftp storage as part of the process.

Sorry my bad for doing a quick post and not explaining WHM 88.0.10 Backups over sftp in WHM to a remote server (not local) WHM >> Backup Configuration >> Additional Destinations = SFTP The server is backing up just fine - however in Restore by user or date - there are no backups available for restore and I do have delete local backups after being transferred ticked to save hdd space So my question is do the backups need to be local for the restore in cpanel/whm to see them to be able to restore them.......

PS I run jet backup to another server as well but like to have the cpanel backups available also, used to use r1 soft and that caught me out by falling over when I needed it most :(

You are correct if you ship the backups off and do not retain local copies, then there won't be anything visible to restore, cPanel does not reach out to the sftp to see what is there. So what we are saying is you have to copy the backup file(s) back from the sftp repo and restore them manually in whm or in the command line.
