Major providers removed from the Common Mail Providers list
Greetings, all.
This morning, I received notification that a number of major players were removed from the Common Mail Providers greylisting. Providers removed were:
- Outlook
- Symantec Messagelabs
- Microsoft Exchange Online Protection
- Hotmail

Hi, Too I received this warnings: cPanel removed the mail provider "Outlook" from the Common Mail Providers list. Emails received from any IP addresses that are associated with this provider will no longer be exempt from Greylisting. I received the same message for: Outlook, Hotmail, Symantec Messagelabs and Microsoft Exchange Online Protection. -Why happened this?. -This is normal or is a problem/error in our servers?. -Your recommend me do anything for not have spam problems in my client's accounts?. Thank you very much. Have a nice day. 0 -
Hello, Same here I received 5 emails like this one : cPanel removed the mail provider "Hotmail" from the Common Mail Providers list. Emails received from any IP addresses that are associated with this provider will no longer be exempt from Greylisting. If you want to continue to trust the IP addresses that are associated with this mail provider, you must add them to the Trusted Hosts list in WHM"s Tweak Settings interface at: https://********************:****/scripts7/greylist/trusted - Hotmail
- Outlook
- Symantec Messagelabs
- Microsoft Exchange Online Protection

I received it, too on a v90.0.3 instance. Not yet seen it on my v88.x instances. I initially locked the instance down and checked for a compromise because the change was not briefed and it happened during a time where nobody with admin access should have made any changes. I can't see any indications of a compromise at first glance. It seems to be an automated / controlled action. Watching this thread though. Edit: I spoke too soon. One of my v88.0.13 installs also just popped. It seems indeed a controlled action. 0 -
Received same emails. 0 -
Hi, Same here. I suspect because certain mails are appearing in inbox despite it being junks. E.g. Spammers using Hotmail to send email? Why was this done without any news? 0 -
Exactly the same thing with me. Gary 0 -
And perhaps some clarity as to what "Common Mail Providers" vs. "Common Domains" - How to Prevent cPanel Users from Creating Certain Domains | cPanel & WHM Documentation - and which is being referred to. (I assume it's not the Common Domains - WHM -> Tweak Settings -> Prevent cPanel users from creating specific domains ... but that is what I initially thought when I got these emails) 0 -
yes just got this myself. Any word on the meaning behind this? 0 -
Hello, I'm still investigating about this matter but I think that these providers are putting 90% of emails coming from cpanel in Spam folder so Cpanel did the same with them The majority of them are Microsoft products as you can see ;) 0 -

cpanel doesn't send mail, individual domains do. One would hope that what you're saying isn't the case, because it will immediately affect tons of our users' inbound email. I'd like to hear the official explanation for this.0 -

It's funny how the high IQ staff at Microsoft still can't deal with spam until today.0 -
I got this notification from all our cPanel servers. cPanel should advise us why they took such a decision. 0 -
That"s what i came here for to find out too 0 -
Yep. We've had the same message from multiple dedicated and virtual servers. I guess Microsoft are no longer trustworthy enough to avoid greylisting. 0 -
I'm getting the same emails now, but also have clients advising they are not able to send emails. I'm currently adding all the IP addresses provided in the emails to the trusted host section, but I would be interested to know why this hasn't been communicated prior to the changes being implemented. 0 -
Same as well got 4 emails Can every tell me what version of cPanel They are using is this all versions or what. Wonder why no one has chimed in from cPanel ? 0 -

If that is true, it makes perfect sense. And I am 100% backing cPanel's attitude. I have several customers that rely on cPanel's email, and despite all the email configurations are 100% correct (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, the domains are not blacklisted, they are not sending newsletters, etc), despite all that, all their emails always end up on these providers Spam folders no matter what. A colleague o mine that works in another company told me last week that he lost a customer just because he couldn't prevent their emails going to Spam. I would say that this is NOT only a Microsoft's problem, but also Google. For example, if you have your domain under management in Google Apps for Business, you can ask Google why your emails are going to other customers Gmail's Spam folder. But if you have not, you cannot. And if you try to find your way throught the pseudo Google support forums, you end up with solutions like: this happens because your customers have links in their email signature, even if the link is only the website from the same domain. WTF?.. The professional email services of Microsoft and Google are very important to this two companies. I seriously believe action must be taken from companies like cPanel. Because this is unfair and a dirty war.0 -
Maybe they are removed from the exclusion list of Greylisting because there is no reason for them to be there in the first place or they were merged into another provider list? Senders that have valid SPF record, they are excluded from Greylisting by default anyway. I've opened a ticket to cPanel customer support just to be sure though. EDIT: While waiting more this post to be approved by a moderator, I got a reply from the cPanel CC with this link: 0 -
I also received this notifications today. I have WordPress instances installed on my dedicated server and I would like to know if this will have an impact on the delivery of emails for addresses (outlook, hotmail ...)? 0 -
Received this today as well. I agree, almost everything goes right to junk and this would explain a lot of things. If they are in fact just assuming everything from cPanel is junk then this should be evolving into a lawsuit. 0 -
Mate, that has no link to the issue you're facing. Because if you customer email always end up in Spam Folder, its the issue with your IP Address. What you can do on your WHM is to setup the mail to be served via a 3rd party instead of your current server, only thing is the configuration is really tricky because the default one bypass certain other settings such as hourly send count. Best if you own the IP address, so you can slowly grow that IP address's reputation. Anyway, feel free to chat me up here at WHM / CPANEL Community With regards to your friend losing a customer yeah, i'm also facing that issue. I'm finding a way to use different mail providers to send emails for different "type" of customers too. 0 -
Thats right, but they should have emailed customers before taking such decision.. waiting for some update from Cpanel on this one. 0 -
Is there any documentation about this setting? (agreed about the difficulties of correctly configured cPanel email making it to the Gmail and Outlook inbox, but I don't think this will help?) 0 -
This is really only relevant if you've enabled Greylisting via WHM. Exim in the default configuration also makes use of the Common Mail Providers list to whitelist ranges through RBL checks, but no RBLs are enabled with exim in the default configuration. Also it seems like they may have just condensed some of the lists down or otherwise refactored them if you analyze the upcp logs: [2020-08-11 04:36:15 -0400] Processing: Updating cPGreyList Common Mail Providers [2020-08-11 04:36:15 -0400] - Processing command `/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/manage_greylisting --init --update_common_mail_providers` [2020-08-11 04:36:15 -0400] [/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/manage_greylisting]

Seems like MessageLabs was probably the only one that was actually removed, and it has been going downhill since it was acquired by Broadcom. Ultimately I'm just speculating, but it looks pretty innocuous to me. Edit: Actually it looks like MessageLabs was probably just refactored too:[2020-08-11 04:36:15 -0400] [/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/manage_greylisting]

So it looks like they just reorganized some lists, and didn't realize the default notification configuration would send confusing alerts resultant from that.0 -

Has anyone else noticed that the "removed" common mail providers haven't actually been removed from the "Common mail providers" list. We got the same emails about Outlook, Messagelabs, etc, all being removed but when you actually check on a server they are still all present so it could just be a bug. 0 -
I've received exactly the same email notifications, but, as D9Dan observed, those common mail providers are still on the "Common Mail Providers" list on my WHM, so in fact, that could be a bug. Anyone from cPanel team to clarify? 0 -
Same here. But @D9Dan is correct. The providers are still active on Email/Greylisting/Common mail providers. Even tried to "Reload Mail Providers from Server" but they still remain active. Maybe this is a thing with v88.0.13? 0 -
I'M WITH TIME SURFER - if this is intentional, then kudos to Cpanel and i'm quite thankful for it. I can't tell you the type of havoc these microsoft properties have wreaked on my business over the last year (especially the last 3 months) by choosing to randomly, and for no reason whatsoever, block my domains from sending email to any of their networks. All of my spam scores, DNS records, etc... check out fine - and no one but microsoft properties are blocking me. Which forces me to use a gmail address - so Surfer is right, this is also a google problem and is absolutely intentional to force people into their email solution. Getting someone at microsoft to pay attention to the issue took almost a month - but even then they just kept batting it back to me with vague/mysterious references to something i must be doing wrong. Every single time they responded they sent me on some wild goose chase that led down a rabbit hole to nowhere. and the reason i'm blocked? they say my domain is spammy. NO ONE ELSE ON THE PLANET says that about my domain... just them. to this day I still cannot send email to any microsoft properties from any of my domains. so... even if this isn't intentional, i'm glad it happened. I hope it wakes them up If that is true, it makes perfect sense. I have greylisting turned off in WHM and still got these emails so I think it must be a bug. 0
