Forwarding won't accept destination email addresses

I'm trying to set up a new bluehost/cpanel email server and need to duplicate existing Forwards. It appears that Forwarding in cpanel won't accept our existing email addresses that have periods or decimal points in the name: such as john.smith@company.com. Yet, such names are "legal" in the RFC for email names.
