Possible to compress existing messages?
Hello,
In the "Mailserver Configuration" page of WHM there is an option to Compress Messages.
[QUOTE]When you enable this option, the system will compress recently created and delivered messages.
We have several customers with150gb of disk space in their email accounts. Is it possible to compress those existing email accounts so we can free up some space on the server? Also, what is the performance hit for enabling this feature? Thanks!

I'm not aware of a noticeable performance hit, at least not as far as any formal measurement that has been done. The compression of one message (as its delivered) would typically not incur much of a change. I'd encourage you to try it and monitor it to see how it affects your system. Keep in mind it is only going to compress new messages not old messages. 0 -
Thanks. Is there a way to compress existing messages? Would switching to MDBOX storage format, and thenback to MAILDIR format work? Or would the messages still be uncompressed even after going back and forth between storage formats? 0 -
No it wouldn't compress those, though moving to mdbox would more than likely save you a considerable amount of space. 0
