Best solution for Backups on several WHM servers

Hello all, I have several VPS servers running C Panel and I am using OVH Hosting as the auto backup system for each. I am looking for a cheaper way to do daily backups rather than spending almost $20 per server each month. If anyone can suggest a safe, reliable and more affordable way to do daily backups, that would be great.

    You can use the built-in cPanel backup function which can either back the server up to a remote storage or to the server itself. If you look for a commercial solution then

    BackBlaze could also be used and it is relatively cheap however you have to get the B2 version as the Personal one doesn't work with Linux. You could read more about JetBackup at their homepage which I linked above :)

    It sounds like your issue is more the location of the backups than the actual backup software, is that correct? If so, you could have all your backups sent to one additional location over FTP directly through the cPanel backup tools. If that isn't enough for your situation, the other tools mentioned also work great, but do have an additional cost.

    Thanks for all your help. I just want to make sure my data is safe when I tranfer from the c panel to an external drive. Any thoughts on what type of software is safe to transport backups from WHM to a hard drive I use for backups?

    The new version (V5) of JetBackup let's you encrypt the backups. Other than securing the remote backup location that's about as secure as you're going to get. One comment on using BackBlaze. While it's inexpensive, in our experience, it's also very slow (i.e. takes a long time to transfer the backup to BackBlaze). As with any backup solution, I'd highly suggest a lot of testing to make sure it works in your use case.

    Thanks so much for your reply. I am thinking about getting a backup server and then setting up SFTP protocol for the tranfer process. With JetBackup, I still need to connect to a cloud or server and that is two types of cost for each server. What are your thoughts on a cloud solution such as a backup server that could auto backup on certain days based on what I set in configuration with WHM to do backups to a remore server of some sort?

    I have used OVH auto backups for many years and its been a while since I even worked with backups or had to worry about it as they took a daily backup on each server. Now they are having major issues with the Qemu and C Panel compatibility. I had to remove my auto backup solution on a few servers due to this.

    Yes whm is great for backups and such, my worry is that if the server goes down and I cannot restore, I also loose all my backups that is stored locally on server.

    If you have a separate disk on your local machine for backups that would greatly reduce the risk of losing the backup files as well. Even if the main hard drive or motherboard were to have an issue on a dedicated machine, the backup data on the second disk would still be present. That disk could be physically moved to a new machine where you could restore with that data. Remote backups are always a great option though, which we do encourage, but there will be an additional cost. It just depends what is worth it to you and what level of redundancy you require in your backup systems.

    Thanks yet again. Lets say adding another disk would not be an option ( OVH ) as I would be in the same boat as now. What can you recommend for cloud services that I can just set up an acocunt and use SFTP from whm to this new solution for auto backups a few times per week. Or do you recommend just getting a simple VPS server and just allowing this to connect to the c panel at intervals to do backups via SFTP?

    It would be easiest to just have another system (not necessarily with cPanel) with an FTP user that you could move the backups to.

    any suggestions on what to add to the Centos 7 system as to plugins or such to make this work or any other solution instead of centos 7 for sever that would be easiest? I think it would be the best to use SFTP though right?

    Any server with any OS would be able to handle the creation of sFTP users without any additional tools - they would just need to be setup manually on the command line, and how you'd do that would depend on the OS. You could also use cPanel for this work, but then you have the additional cost of the license.
