UPDATE: It seems that even though the SSL certificate was valid (I could access hosteddomain.com using https just fine and the certificate said it was not expired and valid), I deleted all SSL certificates for the domain and subdomain and told AutoSSL to check the account. It failed the first time (of course, with the "not accepting requests at this time..." error), but after another manually initiated check for that account, AutoSSL generated and installed a new SSL for that account. After installation, going to hosteddomain.com/cpanel does not redirect to cpanel.myaccount.example.com any more. The browser continues to show hosteddomain.com in the address bar like it used to. So apparently something to do with the domain's SSL certificate (although it was issued and installed by AutoSSL in January) went amuck, as reissuing and installing a new one seems to have repaired the issue.
