CPANEL-40507 - WHM/CPANEL Broke two sites on my server (that I know of) out of the blue today.

Two sites had their document root paths crossed up out of the blue in the middle of the work day. No one on my team was even working on anything on the server. Apparently WHM did something to the HTTPD config that caused the issue. The issue is that for both sites we have the following setup: MainDomain -> MainDocRoot AlternateDomain -> AlternateDocRoot HTTP requests started being served instead as: MainDomain -> AlternateDocRoot AlternateDomain -> AlternateDocRoot On one of the sites, AlternateDocRoot just had a simple .htaccess file with a redirect back to MainDomain.com and that caused that site to go down in a fire death of "too many redirects" for all of its visitors. The other site was just showing a "landing page" instead of their actual website due to the wrong document root. What both sites have in common is that they both have their original document root folder "public_html" replace with a symlink to a project sub-directory, eg: ~/public_html -> ~/project/web This configuration is NOT unique to these sites though. I have at least 5 other sites that use the same set up and did not have issues come up. My managed server team over at liquid web is looking into this to see if there is anything in the cpanel/whm logs that can indicate to us what happened and why. I will report back when I get more information from them. We were able to resolve the problem rebuilding the HTTPD conf file. However I am VERY concerned that this happened. I cant be having WHM/CPANEL just mangling site configs out of the blue.

    We had this issue just now with 102.0.17 version. Domain went missing from httpd conf and with rebuild this was fixed.

    @sunmacet - if you see this happen again, can you create a support ticket with our team? We haven't experienced any new reports of the actual issue since the last major fix so it seems things are working well at this time and your issue may or may not have been related to this larger problem.

    @tyuuu - since you're the only report of this across our entire customer base the last week, I'm wondering if it may not be related to this original issue. Can you submit a ticket to our team so we can examine the server directly?

    Hi, I updated our server from 94 to 102 last week but stopped at 102.0.10 when I saw this thread. We have 4 websites of our own running on this server, each with their own account and I don't want to apply an update that will break our sites. I see that it has been quiet here for a few weeks apart from the following:

    I understand that this was resolved by rebuilding the configuration and restarting Apache - I'd like to avoid this if possible but good to know. Do I correctly assume since it has gone quiet that there are no other issues? Thanks, Alan

    @alanstar - we haven't seen a new issue on this for a few weeks now. You should be fine to update cPanel normally, as you'd move to a version that doesn't have the issue.

    I can confirm if it eases your mind, that we've not had a single case since May 20th, so over 30 days with no incident, pretty much.. We were getting them on the bi-daily so, I can confirm with the latest version we've not heard a peep from people.

    Just to let others know that I applied the update earlier this week and haven't had any issues.

    I have this exact issue cropping up again on my server, on cPanel version 120.0.2 on AlmaLinux. 

    Because the domains are not resolving to the public_html folder specified due to faulty virtualhost mapping, the SSLs are also expiring as it cannot verify the files. 

    WARN Local HTTP DCV error (olympicvillagelistings.ca): The system queried for a temporary file at “http://domain.ca/.well-known/acme-challenge/J9D177QEHKB4HC5S8V8FHREND0851Z5H”, but the web server responded with the following error: 404 (Not Found). A DNS (Domain Name System) or web server misconfiguration may exist.

    Rebuilding the httpd.conf file through scripts, or by making modifications on apache settings (min/max worker adjust, for example) is not fixing it. 

    Sometimes, turning PHP-FPM off and on for that specific user would solve it but it doesn't seem to be working at this point.

    brixwork - we'd likely want to see a ticket on this, as nothing on the system should be changing the domain configurations out of nowhere.

    Way ahead of you. I had a ticket going getting bounced around to general support docs I've already scoured & tried. Ticket # is 95253094, over 12 hrs old ticket now.
