Hi perplex - which version of Linux and cPanel/WHM are you running? (for example AlmaLinux 8.9 running cPanel 118).

perplex - both of those commands are working well for me on a test system running 110, so I don't have a good explanation for what is happening there.
It's interesting that you're getting an I/O error - what permissions do you have on /etc itself. They should be 755 root:root, and /etc/sysconfig is the same.
