Advice on Fallback Setup
Well... major confusion here... feeling a little dumb... and I thought I knew what I was doing. I need some advice please...
So... our primary domain for our business is on a cpanel server that goes down (nothing to do with cPanel)... and it's a major down... heading into 18 hours and more. OK... so one problem is... I set up a "notice" page on another of our cPanel servers to at least let clients know of the issue.... and I CANNOT for the life of me... figure a way to point my domain at that page.
I use DNS only and have our own DNS cluster.
I can't re-assign the domain without losing my 425 DNS entries (that's another story and lesson now learned... not to use the same domain for that) because cPanel won't let me reasign unless I remove the current DNS. I can certainly repoint the A record (and have), but I can't reassign the domain to that server because the DNS already exists.
I created a subdomain (a.mydomain.com) on the alternate server, and then made a CNAME for the

Just a follow-up.... things just came back up... but not letting this go by w/o some prep for the future... so still looking for advice. Tks. 0 -
Is this a static site that doesn't change? ie, does the database get updated by users, etc? I'd say you can just create a new cPanel server, add your domain (don't cluster it or you'll get an error about the zone already existing), then when your site goes down just update your A record to point to the other server. 0 -
Hi Vanessa... yes, it would just be a static page... not a duplicate of the site. I just want to have a "Notice" type page in case something happens to the main site, so we can let clients know. I'm not clear on the "clustering" matter. Is this the WHM>Clusters>Configuration Cluster setting? (I don't see that this server is linked out... and it's not in the list on the main one for being sent info ) Or are you referring to the DNS Cluster? (we use DNS Only on three separate cPanel servers, and no BIND on the hosting servers) How do I "not" cluster a server with the others? Seems like I'm asking a silly question, but not quite grasping how the other servers know that this domain is already assigned. 0 -
Easy mode: Set up two identical cpanel servers, set dns to round-robin to both of them. If you're using a cloud provider you'd use a load balancer for this - if one server goes down, the other will take the traffic. 0 -
Hi Vanessa, Thanks for your time.... it's appreciated. What I was referring to is your statement "... create a new cPanel server, add your domain (don't cluster it or you'll get an error about the zone already existing). How do I NOT cluster it? Is it the name servers assigned to the server that determine what servers it is clustered with? I'm not looking for failover or round robin at this point... just ability to assign a domain to more than one cPanel server (so I can manually repoint the domain to that temp server w/o removing it from the main one).... specifically, how to make a cpanel server that is NOT part of my current group so that I can duplicate a domain assignment. 0 -
By default, a new server would not be clustered unless you cluster it. In this case, I was referring to the DNS cluster. You'll basically have two standalone cPanel servers, and when one fails you just update DNS to point to the other. 0 -
OK... yes, have confirmed. We added a new server but did not add it to the DNS Cluter... and we are able to add any domain that is already on the other servers in the cluster. So as long as we have one server that is NOT in the cluster, we can have an account on it, the same domain name as one on a cluster covered server, a page ready to respond, and when and if neessary, just point the domain at it now. Cool. So that solves that... :) Thank-you 0
