Indexing of the Addon Domain's Default Subdomain
We all know that when you create an addon domain, by default the cPanel creates a subdomain of the main domain on top of which it parks that addon domain. So your site becomes accessible through 2 addresses:
This is not SEO acceptable as it is considered duplicate content, BUT is it a thing to be concerned about?
is publicly accessible of course but since you're not linking to it, rarely anyone would know it exists. My question is, will it be indexed by search engines, I think it probably will? I have two solutions for this:
addon.com
subdomain.main.com

- Permanently redirect each subdomain to its corresponding addon domain.
- Permanently redirect all subdomains to one of your sites of choice, which is easier.

Search engines don't have any super powers, if they don't know that a subdomain exists they don't index it.0 -
It's also worth noting that we don't create the addon.domain.com entry in the DNS zone for the domain, so unless you are manually doing that there won't be a way to connect to that or have it indexed. 0 -
You absolutely do create it. The DNS zone of my main domains has a subdomain A entry for each addon that is created, plus an A record for the www version of it. 0 -
BAH, apparently I didn't wait long enough for my DNS to update after I created the account, as I do see it on a second look! 0 -
:-D So what's the verdict? Can these two be removed from DNS without interrupting the functioning of the addon domains they relate to? 0 -
Yes, there's no problem with removing that from DNS. cPanel doesn't use that record for anything that I can find. 0 -
Thank you, that is good to know. These subdomains don't have a purpose outside of cPanel which uses them as VirtualHosts for parking addon domains. 0 -
cPRex We have a shared server and when we add any addon domain it adds entries for all sub-domains in the DNS zone by default with the main domain. Like below
test.com.maindomain.com. 14400 A Edit Delete www.test.com.maindomain.com. 14400 A Edit Delete cpcontacts.test.com.maindomain.com. 14400 A Edit Delete cpcalendars.test.com.maindomain.com. 14400 A Edit Delete cpanel.test.com.maindomain.com.
What can be done to avoid this since one of our client is facing same issue of Search Engine issue for indexing. IF we search addon domain then default sub-domain reflects first in search engine results.

ghodea6 - if you want to disable this globally, you can disable the Service Subdomains option in WHM >> Tweak Settings. That will get rid of the cpanel and webmail entries, but any others you don't want will need to be manually removed.
