DNS Clustering / IP Question
Hi all. Fairly new to running my own cPanel servers and looking for some help with DNS clustering and how to assign name server IPs at the registrar.
I'll start off with my setup. Everything is running on separate VPS's.
VPS1 - whm1.domain.com
IP: 1.1.1.1
IP: 1.1.1.2
VPS2 - whm2.domain.com
IP: 1.1.1.3
IP: 1.1.1.4
VPS3 - dns1.domain.com
IP: 1.1.1.5
IP: 1.1.1.6
VPS4 - dns2.domain.com
IP: 1.1.1.7
IP: 1.1.1.8
I have clustering configured where WHM1 and WHM2 sync changes to DNS1 and DNS2. While DNS1 and DNS2 are standalone servers.
Now, my main question is this. At my domain registry for "domain.com" I have the name-servers currently setup and glued as such:
ns1.domain.com has IP 1.1.1.1
ns2.domain.com has IP 1.1.1.2
So... do I go back to my registry and change the name server IPs to be the IPs of the DNS servers? So, would it be:
ns1.domain.com has IPs: 1.1.1.5 and 1.1.1.7
ns2.domain.com has IPs: 1.1.1.6 and 1.1.1.8
Would this be the correct setup, and then would I have to go back into WHM1 and WHM2 and reassign IPs or A records within the Basic cPanel and WHM Setup area?
Thanks for your help!!

Hello :) You should configure the following name server IP addresses at your domain registrar: NS1 - 1.1.1.5 NS2 - 1.1.1.7 You should not mix and match the IP addresses from your DNS-Only servers on your name servers. While it's okay to have multiple IP addresses on your DNS-Only servers, only one IP address is required. Upon configuring the name server IP addresses at your registrar, you should update the "A" records for your name servers in the cPanel server that hosts your primary domain name associated with them. Awesome - that worked. Thank you! So to ask a question related to this - if I wanted to move cPanel accounts from one WHM server to another WHM server in the same cluster, I shouldn't experience any downtime DNS wise, right? I just need to remove the old account on the old server and ensure the DNS records are correct on the new server? 0 -
