On a server running cpanel this is not a good idea for many reasons, you can however customise Apache quite a bit. Take a look at these docs: [url=http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/EasyApache/Apache/ApacheConfigurationFile]EasyApache: The Apache Configuration File & Building Apache

Hello :) Is there a specific reason you prefer to use a standalone version of Apache? It's typically a better idea to implement any custom modifications with EasyApache rather than attempting to circumvent it. Thank you.

I think the main reason is being able to recompile it on security updates very quickly.

Critical security updates for Apache are typically pushed out with a new version of EasyApache relatively quickly. While you are welcome to implement a manual installation of Apache, it's important to note that it's not supported and you may encounter incompatibility issues. Thank you.

So I'd need to recompile it using easyapache when these security updates come out?

Yes, you can monitor our EasyApache change log and run EasyApache when you notice a new version of Apache has been included. Thank you.
