System Files not being sent to FTP destination

I'm trying to backup the entire WHM installation. I've set backup configuration in the WHM control panel to include system files. Having discovered that system files aren't included in the offsite copy as standard even though selected in the backup configuration (!?!), I made the manual modification to the ftp destination config file as per an article I found i.e. added upload_system_backup: 1. I forced a backup via SSH (as per another article 'cos there's no means to do this from WHM panel!?!) and both the account and system files were backed up. There's a couple of issues need sorting out as notified in the backup email that was generated, but they're minor. So now I'm expecting the daily scheduled backup to include the system files and receive a confirmation email of the backup. But last nights backup didn't send the system files tar to the FTP server and no backup email was generated. So I checked the FTP destination config file again and it still has upload_system_backup: 1 set (although now config items saved in alphabetic order so something altered this file). I forced another backup and this time got a confirmation email but still no system files. Checked the local backup folder and the system files are there, generated at the time the scheduled backup ran and subsequently when forced, but have not been copied to the destination FTP. Any idea what's going on or where to look at why it not working? A bit concerning - full system backups should be simple and bullet proof once config is set correctly! I also noticed that the email generated when forcing backup (why no email on the scheduled backup?) was sent before the FTP transfer process started. Any way to change this so it doesn't send an email until after the whole backup process has completed i.e. also sent the files to the configured destination? Generating the backup files is only half the backup process - getting those files to an alternative destination is arguably the more important part.

  To update, it looks like the failures occurred due to files changing as they were being read. EX: [QUOTE]/bin/gtar: /var/lib/rpm/Packages: file changed as we read it
  It looks like there may have been some system update activity that was hanging or in progress at the time, as it now completes successfully. Thank you.
