Changed Root Password via Shell - Still cannot log into WHM login?

Hello cPanel peeps... I encountered a strange problem with the root user login and password. Steps before problem occurred: 1. I enabled PHP-GD on my server through the Apache configuration in WHM and let WHM rebuild the configuration (took longer than usual). 2. After a long period, I restarted httpd and the server. When it came back online the root login and password did not work. 3. This prompted me to log into shell and change the password: passwd root -> new password. Despite this, WHM still does not recognize the password in the login. So far all domains are functioning - what's wrong?

  Wow this was embarrassing! Looks like I was on the wrong box, our spreadsheet was listing the IP/hostnames incorrectly. :p maybe I should of had more coffee this morning.
