Disk usage
I have a small VPS (9Gb) administered with cPanel.
When I add together all the space used by domains it comes to about 3Gb.
The total disk usage reported by cPanel is over 7Gb and df -h reports 7Gb too.
Where do I look for the rest of the files dirs. which are taking up the additional space?

Are there any files on a standard installation which can be routinely dumped to make space? 4Gb of system files seems an awful lot. 0 -
The remaining 4 GB is likely a combination of the operating system itself and cPanel. The OS itself typically uses at least 2 GB, and cPanel uses another 2 GB. 4 GB of usage before adding any sites is common. 9 GB is actually below our minimum requirement. Thanks for that. I am just dipping my toe in the water of VPS and I am having to learn the basics of Linux and as always the simple things are the hardest things to sort. 9Gb is plenty for me at the moment but what on earth uses 4Gb? Oh to go back to the days when an entire OS and files fit easily onto a 210Mb hard drive. 0 -

The operating system and cPanel. Unfortunately, 4 GB is really the minimum for a functioning server installation of Linux and cPanel. In addition to that, you need at least 1.6 GB more free to stage the next cPanel update, or the update will fail. With 3 GB worth of sites, you are very close to that 1.6 GB requirement. I regret to be the bearer of bad news, but 9 GB is just not enough for even a small VPS.0 -
1.6Gb for a cPanel update - now the world really has gone mad. In an application which is text based I find it incredible that it takes up so much space. One of the websites on my VPS has over 11,000 images on it and uses less than that. By comparison, an operating system should use much less than that. Welcome to the days of inefficient programming. 0 -
I'm curious how large those 11,000 images are, each? 0 -
They are mostly between 80k and 100k 0 -

You must be young, I remember first booting from a cassette tape then upgraded to a floppy and saving the same files there ;-/ You could install ConfigServer Explorer to poke around the files, just be careful :-)0 -
Yup, a wee slip of a lad - that's me. My experience of loading from cassettes was limited to a ZX spectrum but I didn't like to mention that in case I started to relive the trauma of that awful whistling noise. I think I will give that config explorer a miss for now - I am likely to do some serious damage as I can delete vital files as well as the next man. I went for the ISP's basic VSP but they didn't mention anything about it being less than minimum spec. 0 -
Swap memory has got full, is this a consequence of trying to operate on in an inadequate space? How do I limit the swap file size? 0
