Moving existing server to dnsonly
Hi, quick bit of advice needed. I've found alot of info on the forums about DNSonly but still have a question.
We have
ns1.server1.com (ip1)
and ns2.server1.com (ip2)
used for 60-80 websites hosted on a cpanel webserver1.
ns1.server2.com (ip1)
and ns2.server2.com (ip2)
used for 60-80 websites hosted on a cpanel webserver2.
Now we want to move both ns1 dns's to DNSonly server1
and both ns2 dns's to DNSonly server2.
I understand the DNSonly set up but are we able to:
1. Change the ip addresses assigned to our nameservers at the registrar to the DNSonly ip's (instead of the individual servers)
2. Remove nameservers and turn off bind on both webservers
...without customers having to change their nameservers (which would be a nightmare)? I'm guessing so as it'll just need propagation at our domain registrar for the new ns2 ip's and customers will begin routing through the DNSonly servers?
Also is it possible in DNSonly to have both ns1's using the same ip and on the other DNSonly server both ns2's using the same ip? Will everything sync ok.
Very much appreciate any advice etc. I've spent hours reading up and planning/learning before asking this but want to be very sure there is no downtime to customers as w offer a high level of service. :-)

Hello :) The plans you have described are proper methods of setting up a DNS cluster. Changing the IP addresses of the name servers at the registrar and disabling bind on the local hosting machines are acceptable steps to take. It's okay to use the same IP address for NS1/NS2 on each DNS-Only server, however you should not use the same IP address for NS1 on each DNS-Only machine. The IP address needs to be added to the machine it's utilized for. Thank you. 0 -
Great thanks Michael. So just regarding you comment on the ip's, if dns server 1 has ip 1.1.1.1 and dns server 2 has ip 2.2.2.2 I can add the following Ns1.nameserverdomain1.com Ns1.nameserverdomain2.com Ns1.resellerdomain.com All on ip 1.1.1.1 And Ns2.nameserverdomain1.com Ns2..nameserverdomain2.com Ns2.resellerdomain.com All on ip 2.2.2.2 And it will work well as a cluster :-) 0 -
Yes, that's acceptable. Thank you. 0
