Assign a new IP address to the primary network interface
Hi,
I used the IP Migration Wizard to change my server's primary address. In section Update your system startup scripts to reflect the new main IP address you say you have to update the IP address of the primary nic, eth1 in my case. I have one primary address attached to eth1 and 4 secondary ips attached to aliases eth1:cp{N}.
Given I used one of this secondary ips in the Migration Wizard,
1. Is it necessary to update the ifcfg-eth1 file with the new IP? As far as I understand all 5 ips point to the same server.
2. If this change is required, after adding the new ip to ifcfg-eth1, what else should I do? Would I have to set the primary address as an alias? Could you give some hint on how to do this? I couldn't find any virtual interface (e.g. eth1:0) file like the mentioned in
/http://www.tecmint.com/create-multiple-ip-addresses-to-one-single-network-interface/
Thank you for your time.

WHM will only assign IP aliases, it will not change the configured network settings on your server. So yes, you need to change the IP in ifcfg-eth1 as well as possibly /etc/sysconfig/network (if your gateway is defined there), then restart networking services. 0 -
Hello :) Yes, Vanessa is correct. There are no options in cPanel/WHM that will modify the network configuration itself. Please be careful when completing this on your own, as mistakes can lead to your server becoming inaccessible. Thank you. 0 -
Thank you both for your answers. After all I didn't change the IP assigned to eth1 because my server provider advised me not to change the primary IP. For those who want to proceed with the configuration, a cPanel Technical Analyst recommend me this document: [url=http://www.codero.com/knowledge-base/questions/248/How+to+change+the+primary+IP+addres+of++a+WHM%7B47%7DcPanel+server]codero.com knowledge base :: How to change the primary IP addres of a WHM/cPanel server 0
