UK Surveillance Laws - How to Comply

Hi Guys, I thought I'd open this up here as it's going to be important going forwards. How do you change cPanel to not delete logs for 12x months. Specifically Email. Many Thanks David

  What logs are you referring to, specifically? Most all of them are configurable.

  If every log was kept so you could use the Mail Delivery Reports feature in WHM to be able to go back 12x months. You would have a record of all Incoming and Outgoing email. Only thing I've found so far, was in Tweak Settings:- Log rotation size threshold (Minimum: 10) [?] 300 MB default MB AND Keep log files at the end of the month [?] Note: Selecting this option is not recommended, as log files can quickly use up your server"s disk space. On Off default I'm assuming that last one tells the server not to delete any logs? So If i turn that on, they will just stay there, then I could run a cron script to delete old log files every 12x months?

  Hello :) Could you elaborate on what specific log files you need to retain? For instance, is it the Apache log files, Exim logs, or some other type? Thank you.

  Greetings fellow sussex person :) The eximstats days to retain in tweak settings is useful here I believe, retaining the email logs in the database has the useful benefit of it being obvious to the user that their email logs are being retained if they have access to and browse the relevant part of their cPanel interface. I'm hoping that outlaw knock something similar to [url=http://www.out-law.com/topics/tmt--sourcing/data-protection/data-retention-laws-what-they-mean-for-communication-service-providers/]Data Retention Laws: What they mean for communication service providers for the new law. I'd be interested to know if you're planning on shipping logs out to a specific storage box at an interval, on some servers I can see that database getting absolutely huge and potential performance problems...

  Most of the system log rotation is configured in /etc/logrotate.conf and /etc/logrotate.d/*. You can adjust your retention periods there.

  Hi what UK laws are these i have not herd of anything ?

  I don't think this new UK law affects hosting companys, reading in the Independent newspaper it only mentions ISPs and mobile phone operators.
