Hello :) Have you tried extracting the archive on the server itself using the traditional "tar" commands to rule out any issues with the extraction tools on your personal computer? Thank you.

No, I did not and would not know how. I can upload the downloaded archive again to the server, but don't know how to get to its command interface, nor which command to enter. (I also don't have a Linux computer.) Before there were never be any problems to extract files with 7-zip. I have a backup from after the server move, dated may 17, which has no problems. Begin july, with a new home directory backup, I noticed the problem. I installed then the latest versions of Peazip and Winrar to no avail. Begin august, the problem persists and I posted on this forum. I don't know if 7-zip, Peazip and Winrar use the same algorithm to decode the tar, but all 3 are complaining that the archive is not readable or corrupt.

The reason it's important to test on the server is to determine if the package itself is actually damaged, or if it's an issue with the extraction tool you are using. Do you have root access to the server to test this? If not, please report this issue to your web hosting provider so they can investigate this on your behalf. Thank you.

I will open a ticket for verifying that on the server the backup can be read. But should a backup not be portable and usable on other systems then the generating server?

Yes the backup should be portable and i never had issues with a .tar file on a local windows pc using winrar, maybe your file is actual not good.

Having the same exact problem as ghia. I have a dedicated server with Host Gator and contacted them concerning this issue and here was their response: [quote] Hello, Thank you for contacting HostGator. Doing some testing we do see that 7-zip is opening the file incorrectly. We are unable to assist in this issue. As we ran tests with our test system and found that 7-zip is not able to open the file correctly. This does appear to be due to a change in the way that Cpanel archives the backups. As there is already a ticket in with Cpanel we do recommend following the forum post you did find. As we have verified the archive is correct and can be extracted without issues on the server and on our workstations. Please let us know if you have any questions we will gladly assist.
Have found can not open the backups in Winzip, 7zip, PeaZip, WinRar, and etc... It appears Host Gator is laying blame with Cpanel and for me to watch for update via this post. Corrupted backups do me no good. I am lost on figuring out how to resolve this issue. One of the sites having this issue I have been running weekly backups on since 2001 and never had issues opening the backups until a couple weeks ago. Have tried opening the backup on all my cpu's as well as friends and families and same result each time. So I have ruled out my pc's be the problem.

Do you have root access to the server? If so, feel free to open a support ticket using the link in my signature so we can take a closer look. The previous poster never provided a ticket number to provide updates for. Thank you.

Yes, I have root access. I will open a ticket. [COLOR="silver">- - - Updated - - - Just tried to open a ticket but see that login is for a Cpanel store (I do not have a cpanel account as I have a dedicated server with HostGator which cpanel came already installed as they are managed) - only cpanel account I have is on this forum. Is there another way to open up a ticket?

To update, internal case number 111853 is open to address an issue where sparse files are included in the backup archives, preventing Windows applications such as 7zip and WinRar from extracting the archive. Please monitor our change log for this case number to determine when a resolution has been published: cPanel - Change Log Thank you.

Identical problem for me -cannot extract latest .tar backup of my website made using CPanel. Note that previous in May 2014, (and before on many occasions) has been fine. 7Zip refuses, no error messages - WinRAR give error messages "sparse file is not supported", and "unknown method in ...dns_cache.db This with CPanel v11.44.1 (build 17), CPanel Pro 1.0 RC1. Web server (shared) is running linux on i686, php 5.4.29 My machine is Windows 7 running WinRAR 5.11 (32bit) and 7zip920-x64 Do hope you can fix this soon! Thanks

Similar problem here ... Server: CENTOS 6.5 x86_64 hyper-v " WHM 11.44.1 (build 17) Local: Win 8.1, Tried both 7-zip920-64 and WinRAR 5.11-64 7-Zip just aborts while WinRAR aborts with three error messages: - Unknown method in .\.spamassassin - sparse file not supported - The archive is corrupt I had filed a ticket with my host who blamed the 7-ZIP software, but judging from this thread, I suspect the issue is cPanel related.

Unzip backup problem Hi, in the last years I had made regular backup ( fullbackup or home end DB backup) of my domains through cPanel Backup wizard menu, so they was regularly unzip on my PC with Win 7 64 bit with Winrar or 7zip. Now unfortunately when I try to unzip my new backup I"ve errors so I can"t backup my domains. I"ve tried unzip the backup on Debian Ubuntu but I"ve similar problems. I"ve read the case 11853, about it, open on 09-04-2014 but at today I can"t find an available resolution of it. PLS any suggestion for have right backup of my domains? Many thanks in advance

As a temporary workaround, you could convert the sparse files within the account using a command such as: cp -av --sparse=never /path/to/file /path/to/converted-file
Then, remove the original file and generate the backup archive. Thank you.

Is there a work-around for those of us without shell access? Not being able to back up sites for several months now is making me very nervous. I understand I can see in the changelogs that the fix hasn't been completed, but how do I find out if it's even been assigned? Or being worked on?

Re: Unzip backup problem I agree with woodop5, use cPanel paying licanza just to be able to perform certain tasks but it seems that evil is spending my money.

You will need to have your hosting provider assist you with the workaround if you do not have shell access. Thank you.

As a workaround I would use a linux distribution to extract files. E.g. use Virtualbox on your windows machines and fetch a linux distribution. If I get the problem correctly it is the tar spares option which still no extractor supports under windows. A 7zip support for spare files under Windows is still not available. The discussion can be found here: [url=http://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/bugs/1174/]7-Zip / Bugs / #1174 problem untarring tar created with tar option S (sparse) NTFS is supporting the concept. [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparse_file]Sparse file - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Perhaps there is a working implementation for tar files out there.

I have the same problem, backup files are corrupted. This is a urgent case, I not understand why is not solved, because backups are one of more important things in a hosting panel.

Ask the developer of your extractor tool to support spars files. I don't see Cpanel NOT using sparefiles. Id you cannot extract the backupfile on a linux platform we might can call the backupfiles corrupted. Did you use Windows? What extractor tool did you try?
