cent os memory usage high
Hi, I've just set up another vps on ESXi. This uses cent os 6.5 and was set up using the cpanel iso download.
It's currently using trial license and all is well.
However, the server info reports
0.2% cpu usage (no accounts at the moment)
86% memory usage - 2Gb installed (and a warning)
86%! Our other vps's running a large amount of busy websites, Wordpress etc use much less, usually around 40-50%.
The only difference is they use Cent os 5.1
Does cent os 6.5 use all the memory for cache even if there are no accounts?
My concern is that ESxi usually shares memory with other vps's and now 1 empty vps is hogging 2GB for nothing. Unless I missing something?

Hello :) The following thread might be helpful to you: Memory usage apparently higher than expected Thank you. 0 -

Thanks, I've just had a read of that and understand it. However, it seems I'm seeing the opposite because he has 22% of memory used in the system information, whereas I'm seeing 85% with nothing on the server. System information Server load 0.10 (1 CPU) Memory Used 84.88% (1,631,756 of 1,922,424) Swap Used 0.58% (23,932 of 4,128,760) Current Memory Usage total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1922424 1833120 89304 0 17208 187092 -/+ buffers/cache: 1628820 293604 Swap: 4128760 23932 4104828 Total: 6051184 1857052 4194132 I'd appreciate if you could clarify the above figures? Also is it just Centos6 which uses caching, is that why our other servers don't use this much ram? Thanks0 -
Hello, It would be good if you check what actually are the running process. Run # top -c ( and press shift+m) - to find the memory usage along with the running processes. 0 -

Hello, Very weird it looks :( Just curious to know, what version of MySQL are you running on ? 0 -

Currently installed: 5.5.37 Centos and cpanel installed from the cpanel download It is trial at the moment and shows accelerated version of cpanel but that's just an image issue with the logo, it changes to vps optimised when licensed, still the same install. Odd as when we restart the server it's on a low memory usage then goes up and up quickly and sits at 85% so it does look like caching in cent os6 but from the figures it's odd. It's also not good for ESXi as I'm not sure if it can still reclaim unused memory for other vps's (usually they don't need the 2GB especially with no accounts!)0 -
Just to update this thread after liasing with Cpanel support. We couldn't find anything wrong and after setting up a test server Cpanel saw something similar but confirmed it was not Cpanel related. However after a couple of restarts the issue seemed to resolve. The only setting I changed was to disable the vmwaretools CD installer loading on the vm in esxi/vsphere (perhaps a driver for this caused high memory usage, I don't know.) I also ran yum update. Memory dropped to around 20% and remained consistent, so I then went ahead and did the vmware tools install. Everything is still fine. One thing which did come out of this is that Cpanel recommend that SELinux is turned off 0 -
I am happy to see the issue is no longer occurring. Thank you taking the time to update this thread with the outcome. 0
