SS Certificate Installation

This will be my very first purchase and installation of a certificate and I have a very basic question. When I purchase the certificate will I be able to use it under every domain on that server? How will the server know that it needs to go to

  Hello :) You will need to purchase the certificate for the domain name you want to use it on (including whether you prefer to use it on the www or non-www prefix). You can then setup a redirect so that all requests to the non-www prefix are redirected to the www-prefix for secure connections, or vice-versa. Thank you.

  Does this include all subdomains too? SO, will I purchase the certificate for domain.com to "cover" all subdomains? first.domain.com second.domain.com etc.

  You must purchase a wildcard certificate if you want it to cover your subdomains. Thank you.
