server gets stuck during boot
Can someone please help? At 9 AM this morning my dedicated server went down and it wont reboot. I have it running under the "Customer rescue system" and I am able to access my files but am getting limited support from OVH. I cannot submit a support ticket to cPanel because I cannot access my Support access ID.
The only thing I received from OVH was this:
Can someone please provide any suggestions? This is a live server with clients on it. Thank you
Here are the details of the operation performed:
The server gets stuck during the boot phase, with the message:
(mv: cannot move /usr/tmp.secure to /usr/tmp.secure.cpback/tmp.secure directory not empty) A restart on the standard OVH kernel ('netboot') does not correct the situation.
Actions:
Rebooting the server to "rescue" mode (Linux)
result:
Boot OK. Rescue mode accessible.
recommendations:
Configuration / error to be corrected by the customerCan someone please provide any suggestions? This is a live server with clients on it. Thank you

Isn't their an option using which you can connect the server via KVM ? You will need access to console to troubleshoot the issues. If you are unable to access the console, you need to ask your provider to assist.0 -
Their KVM is $30 per day which I would have paid but I'm not that familiar with it. I was able to get the server booted back up. I deleted the "/usr/tmp.secure" and "/usr/tmp.secure.cpback" directories and using SSH I was able to log in and also delete some files. There was a poorly written script that was downloading images from IMDb (nearly 100 Gb in images) and it filled up the hard drive. milesgeek, thank you for your reply. 0 -

Glad to know that your server is back online and websites are functional. You are welcome.0 -
Hello :) I am happy to see you were able to determine the cause of the issue. Thank you for updating us with the outcome. 0 -
It seems as if this nightmare has returned. I repeated my steps from the last time and I have not had any success. OVH says that the problem is with tmp.secure. Their email only says "check securetemp" I am able to mount my drives using SSH and I can use FTP but the server itself wont boot and cPanel wont start. Does anyone have any ideas what would cause this? I am using Centos 7 and the latest cPanel. I had also installed NGINX which is also in the tmp.secure folder. Thank you 0 -

cPanel does not support CentOS 7 at this time. Support for CentOS 7 is targeted for cPanel version 11.50. You can follow the feature request at: [url=http://features.cpanel.net/responses/rhel-7-centos-7-support]RHEL 7 & CentOS 7 Support | cPanel Feature Requests Thank you.0 -
I rebooted my server today and got stuck at boot with the same problem. The /script/securetmp just hangs after giving out this error. Why is that? Why did the script not just remove the /usr/tmp.secure.cpback/ folder, so it could back the /usr/secure.tmp/ folder to it? Or rename the old backup, for crying out loud. I removed the folder myself and ran the /scripts/securetmp again and it has been securing the /tmp for ages now. Hopefully it finishes soon. 0 -
The previous poster's issue was related to the use of CentOS 7, which is not yet supported with cPanel. Are you using a supported OS? Also, are you using a default system language environment other than English? Thank you. 0 -

Hello, This is how a previous poster addressed the issue. Note that you may need to consult with a qualified system administrator for assistance, as it's not something our support team will be able to address for you. Thank you.0 -

Hello, You can move those archives to a remote destination via a utility such as rsync. EX: rsync -zrp /path/to/backups/ user@remote.host:/home/
