FTP permission errors - extra / in path

We've started running into a new error recently with one cPanel provider. We use a scripted deployment system that uses FTP to place site files. What we're getting is an FTP permission error and checking the logs, we're seeing an extra slash in the home path of every user account like this: /home/useraccount//public_html While desktop FTP clients seem to be able to deal with it, our script based FTP cannot. Is this a change in cPanel or is the provider using some sort of symbolic link or hard linking?
