  after some preliminary research it looks like my hosting company does not allow SSH access - I wonder if what sneader proposed is possible without it...if only I could contact him/her...

  You could try downloading the file via FTP or File Manager and then re-uploading it. Or, you could ask your hosting provider to make the change on your behalf. Thank you.
