Reset Root Password

I haven't seen a thread that clearly addresses this topic yet. How do you reset the root whm password? I don't have shell access, but I do have access to the hyper-v server cpanel is hosted on. Are there step-by-step instructions that explain this? A former employee changed the root password, and now I'm looking to recover access to whm. Thank you!
