Can I copy email contents from a mailbox to another one?

One of my customers want to make a copy of the contents of certain mailboxes before deleting them, so my first answer was recommending to use IMAP to download all the contents to a local PC, however if there is too much information in the account that would take too much time. So I was wondering if it would be possible to create a new mailbox called backup@mydomain.com and copy there the contents of the folders of the other accounts I want to keep contents from. The idea is to create a folder for each mailbox and copy in there the INBOX, SENT MAILs and other folders. Is that possible? How easy would it be to read the email contents then after?
